Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! We are excited that we are already into our third year of the LEAP. 2006 was a busy year, we saw the Fanikha Hinako virgin coconut oil factory opened, the Coconut Kids Club moved into a new building and expanded to include a playgroup, 22 community water pumps installed, three temporary jetties completed and a permanent cement one well on the way, plus another 10 or so fibre-glass canoes built, bringing our total number up to 20! We also continued with our organic gardening, school support and community support programmes.

2007 looks to be even more exciting as we expand in all of those projects, plus add a few more.

Richard Wallace is looking after Holidays with Purpose in Australia and is putting together some exciting trips this year. Sococo Virgin Coconut Oil produced on Hinako, is also about to hit the stores in Australia so look out for it! Contact us for more info on these products and how you can become involved with LEAP!

In unexpected parts of the island tiny vegetables patches are to be seen. Holes in the coral, newly exposed since the earthquake are being filled with compost and used as garden plots, old plastic wash tubs and a whole variety of containers are being turned into planters as the villagers of Hinako discover the joys of composting. We held a composting demonstration a couple of months back and initially did not have much of a response, but as our cucumbers grow bigger…so do the number of people starting to catch on to the new compost craze!

We are excited to announce that the virgin coconut oil factory at the LEAP Appropriate Technology Training Centre is now in operation! After a year and a half of study, testing, designing, and hard work the idea has finally come to fruition. The kids club is going strong and they are enjoying their new centre, funded and built by a group of “Holidays with Purpose” guests from Australia. Water is flowing freely from the 22 communal water pumps sponsored by SurfAid and was in fact the only water available on the islands for much of the dry season.

We are all so grateful to them for sharing their time, knowledge, enthusiasm and love with us. They have played an integral part in establishing LEAP in the Hinako Islands. Johanna has been training Tina a local woman to teach drama, songs and games to the children of Coconut Kids Club. Richard has been overseeing the work at the LEAP centre on Hinako as well as writing and encouraging the team.
